gulfs
electronic sound and light sculptures, 2019
+15V, external power supply
gulfs is a duo of interactive electronic sound and light sculptures that react to movement. They are equipped with three pyroelectric infrared sensors each, allowing them to sense the space around them in a 360° circle, creating different ‘zones’ for each sensor and their overlaps. When movement occurs in any of these zones, certain sound and light changes are triggered, and will continue to be triggered as the audience move between zones. The idea of gulfs is to invite the audience to interact with a communicative entity of unknown qualities; the interactor will approach the sculptures with little to no knowledge on how to induce a dialog and will have to experiment with different behavioral approaches in order to determine how to make the sculptures react to their presence. This experimental process leads to a real-time ‘choreography’ and composition of sound, light and movement. Each sculpture is about 60x60x70cm.
